Avengers X Mad Hatter part 2

' There is a place. Like no place on Earth.
A land full of wonder, mystery, and danger!
Some say to survive it, you need to be as mad as a hatter. '

Loki and Thor were the first to wake up, the others lay scattered around close by, clearly unconscious. They were in a huge field, behind them was a tall wall of trees, packed so close together, that nothing could get through. Ahead of them was a tall hill, with a dilapidated windmill barely visible siting forlornly on top of it, it's blades broken and torn. The afternoon sun shone one the small piece of land where it was always tea time. While Thor was still sitting up, Loki was already standing, taking in his surroundings. Their was nothing particularly strange about this place, but Loki knew better. They where no longer in Midgard.

"BROTHER." boomed Thor as he clapped Loki on the back, not enough to make him stumble, but just enough to hurt.

"not you're brother." muttered Loki, too quiet for Thor to hear.

"WHERE DO YOU THINK WE ARE?" with as much contempt as possible, Loki removed Thor's hand from his shoulder as if it where contaminated, before responding.

"We are obviously in the place referred to as 'Wonderland'. We have left Midgard behind. Someone brought us here. Someone with magic just as powerful as mine. If you wish to make yourself useful, why don't you go wake up those pathetic midgardians."

Thor frowned at his brother's attitude, but decided it would be best to wake the rest of the Avengers.

He walked up to the closest person to him, who happened to be Tony, and poked him.

"BROTHER ANTONY, YOU MUST AWAKEN!" called Thor. Tony shifted, trying to get comfortable on the grass

"Mummy...... five more minutes.... *snore*" he'd gone back to sleep.

Thor sighed. The hard way then. Thor tightened his grip on Mjolnir, and pressed its tip to Tony's exposed upper arm.

The electric shock was enough to make him shoot straight up, his hair standing on end.

"MONKEY ATE MY HOMEWORK!!!" he bellowed in Thor's face.

"YOU SHALL HAVE TO WORRY ABOUT THAT MONKEY LATER, BROTHER ANTONY. FOR NOW, WE MUST AWAKEN OUR FRIENDS." with that, Thor wandered off to wake up Natasha and Clint. Leaving Stark to brush himself down and walk over to Steve and Bruce.

Bruce, a relatively light sleeper, woke up easily. Steve on the other hand, slept like a rock. No matter what Tony and Bruce did, he remained asleep. Their attempts got more and more frantic and ridiculous until the pare wore themselves out.

Tony huffed and sat down... On Steve, trying to catch his breath.

"Do you think if we held his nose he'd die?" joked Tony

"Might not be a bad idea." mutters Bruce irritably.

Tony, taking him seriously, pinched the captains nose. Steve frowned in his sleep. Then he twitched. After a full minute, the two became worried.

"I think you've killed him." stated Bruce.

Tony was just about to let go, when Steve's eyes flew open and he bolted upright, taking great gulps of air. Tony, having been thrown off when Steve sat up, picked himself off the ground grumbling irritably.

After he'd caught his breath, Steve looked around curiously.

"Where are we?"

"We're not in Kansas anymore, that's for sure!" snickered Tony.

Steve scowled at the billionaire. Bruce helped Steve to his feet, and they met up with Thor, Natasha, and Clint in the middle of the field.

"Is everyone ok?" asked Natasha

"Where are we?" interrupted Clint

"How do we get back?" inquired Bruce

"Will there be sexy rabbit girls?" pondered Tony

" WHERE IS LOKI?" bellowed Thor

Everyone stopped what they were doing and looked around. Yep. Their scenery was completely Loki free.

"He's probably up to no good. I knew he couldn't be trusted!"

"MAN OF IRON!! MY BROTHER HAS CHANGED!!" yelled an offended Thor

"Oh yeah? Well where is he then?" demanded Tony

"Guys!" interrupted Natasha, placing a hand on each of their heads and turning them so that they where looking up at the hill. Sure enough, Loki was standing near the top. Though how he'd managed to make it that far in all that armour was anyone's guess.

"BROTHER! WHAT ARE YOU DOING?" yelled Thor, so loud he made everyone flinch.

"You'll have to see it to believe it." called Loki

Intrigued, they set off up the grassy hill towards the god of mischief. When they finally got there they saw a sight they'd never forget.
( Q mental image of Tim Burton's Mad Hatters Tea Party )

The grassy hill flattened out, and the broken windmill was clearly visible, looking even more broken up close. In front of the windmill was a long table made up of lots of little tables covered with one big table cloth. The table was littered with tea cups, plates, saucers, tea trays, cake, biscuits, and tea pots with three spouts. Their were many chairs along the outside, and one big armchair at the head of the table, with the pink eyed raven perched on the head rest. This was the only chair that was occupied. An air of gloom hung over the scene before them, as if they were the first people to set foot there in years. Their attention was caught by the individual sitting in the armchair, a large top hat tipped low, obscuring their features. The person was slouched, and limp in the chair, their white gloved hands resting on their lap, and their shoulders hunched.

They were dressed in a long dark metallic blue coat, the cuffs of a lacy white shirt poking out, with a black and white spotted ruffled bow tie, and a dark red waist coat beneath it. A load of rolls of cotton of all different colours where strung over one shoulder and across the persons chest. Their was a lilac handkerchief poking out of the dark dress pants that looked a little short at the ankles, revealing calf length black and white stripy socks, and brown formal shoes that looked like they'd seem better days. If fact, the whole outfit looked like it had seen better days. Especially the hat.
It was an incredible hat. Dark patterned velvet, with a peach coloured sash that tied around the base, and the whole thing decorated with a peacock feather, four hat pins, and a note poking out of the sash with 10/9 on it. A bit of unruly bright orange hair stuck out from beneath it.

"No way." breathed Steve. Before anyone could stop him, he was off towards the table. The others scrambled to follow him, well, except Loki, who strode towards the table a step behind the captain. As they drew closer, Loki could practically feel the magic radiating from the Hatter lift the hairs on his armour clad arms. Suddenly they all came to a holt, standing a foot from the table.

The person in the chair slowly lifted their head to stare wide eyed at the avengers with amber green irises. The Mad Hatter was a she! Two long bangs of straight orange hair framed her delicate features, their tips just brushing her collarbone, leaving the rest of her hair short and as a result, sticking out a little from under the hat. Her skin was pale, except for her eyes. They were smudged black all around, making her eyes look sunken and mad. Her dark rimmed eyes seemed to scan the avengers, taking everything in. It was like having you're soul examined. Suddenly an insane grin spread across the Hatters features. The atmosphere changed drastically. The grass grew greener, the Hatters clothes burst with colour and even her bow tie perked up.

She stood up and walked across the table, sending cups and plates rolling in all directions and making the tables wobble on the uneven ground. She made it to the end of the table ,used a chair as a stepping stone and came to a dead stop in front of the group.

"I've been expecting you!" she cried joyously. Then her smile faded slightly " You're late. Naughty." she shook her finger in their faces like a mother scolding her children. Then her grin widened again, showing them her pearly white teeth. "But now that you're here, we can finally have our tea." quick as a flash she reached out and grabbed the two people closest to her, which happens to be Loki and Steve, and dragged them over to the table. They said nothing, being too shocked to speak, and too surprised by the Hatters iron grip to struggle.

She sat them down on two chairs and gestured to the others join them. When they didn't move she sighed. The strode back over to them, and with her long legs she easily closed the distance. In panic, Clint and Nat snatched their guns from their holsters and pointed the barrels at the Hatter. The Hatter rolled her eyes and snapped her gloved fingers, turning the guns into bouquets of bright flowers. The two agents yelped and dropped the flowers.

"Please sit down. You're my guests so it's only polite to show me some curtesy." when no response or movement came from the Avengers she sighed again.

Snapping her fingers once more, several chairs flew into the air and scooped the avengers off their feet before flying back to the table, taking the avengers with them. Satisfied, the Hatter disappeared in a puff of smoke and reappears back in the armchair, already poring tea from a tea pot with three spouts into three cups.

"Ahh!," she exclaimed, making all seven of them jump. They hadn't noticed her reappear. "No wonder you're late!" she was staring at the face of her pocket watch. "This watch is two days late!" she began fiddling with it again "There! All better." they all stared at her. She stared right back

"I see my messenger did his job well." the raven cawed in agreement. She went back to pouring the tea.

"Sugar?" she asked Loki, who was sitting to her right. He nodded politely. The Hatter handed him his tea, which he gratefully accepted, then proceeded to hand out everybody else's tea, weather they liked tea or not.

The Hatter leaned back in her chair an sipped her tea contentedly. An uncomfortable silence fell upon the table, nobody being brave enough to brake it. Their was a certain vibe they all got from the Hatter. One that clearly gave away her madness, and mad people can be unstable.

"I'm sure you have questions, come on. Out with it."

Tony fidgeted when the Hatters gaze fell on him. She razed an eyebrow. He cracked.

"Are you really the Mad Hatter?" she smiled broadly.

"The one and only. You may call me Hatter. It's only fitting you know who I am, seeing as I already know who all of you are thanks to my messenger."

"Is this Wonderland?" asked Bruce

"Yes. This is my own little corner of Wonderland, only accessible to you're world through that book. Each realm of wonderland has a book."

"IS THIS ONE OF THE NINE REALMS?" boomed Thor. The Hatter stuck her pinky in her ear and wiggled it, obviously miffed at the sudden noise.

"Who ever said their where nine realms? Why nine? Why not ten? Or eight?" she turned from Thor and stared at Loki, who'd been watching her intently while taking sips of his tea. He was the only one who'd actually touched the stuff.

"Are you the source of this power?" the Hatter flashed her mad grin in his direction, while the others were looking between the two of them in utter confusion.

"Why yes, I am." Loki's eyes glittered with interest. He was about to ask another question but he was interrupted by Natasha.

"Why have you brought us here?" the Hatters grin vanished, and she became gloomy again.

She lowered her head, letting her hat cast her face into shadow, hiding it from view.

"I take it you know the story of Alice and her adventures here? Well she actually came back many more times after that. I watched her grow and she became my best friend. One day she came back, and instead of being the sweet little girl I knew, she was a young woman. All grown up..." the Hatter paused in her story to heave a long sigh, before continuing.
"Anyway, while she'd been away, Wonderland became a dark twisted place, full of dark creatures. Turns out, when little Alice went home, nobody believed her story of white rabbits, talking flowers, grinning cats, and Mad Hatters... They told her to stop lying, but she always was a stubborn girl. She'd refused to stop believing. So they locked her away. They called her insane." the Hatter gripped her tea cup so hard a web of spidery cracks spread across its surface.

"They did horrible things to her. Experimental treatments, shock therapy, strange untested drugs. They broke her." the Hatters voice shook with suppressed rage. "Her mind was directly connected to Wonderland, and what they did to her affected us here. Everything became twisted. But Alice came back. She came back and set things right. She fixed Wonderland, and put us all back together again. We owed her our lives. She was a hero."
The hatter smiled at the happy memory.

"But one day, Alice left. She said she'd be right back, so we waited.... And waited... And waited.... and waited. March and the Dormouse kept me company, but I missed my best friend. Their is no time in Wonderland, but it felt like years. She said she'd come back....
She never did. Against better judgment, me and Chess went looking for her. When we finally found her, she was an old woman on her death bed. We do not age in Wonderland, but Alice did. At first, I was angry at her. She just up left us! But then I discovered she'd lived a rich full life, and even had children. She no longer needed her fairy tale land. She told me the location of the Vorpal blade, the weapon she'd used to restore Wonderland, told me she was giving it to me. Me and Chess... We stayed with her until the bitter end. 'Thank you', she said...
'Thank you'..." the Hatter went silent for a few minutes, mourning her best friend.

"That was years ago in you're time, but here in Wonderland, were only now feeling its effects. Wonderland is falling again. This is bad for you too. The twisted creatures are somehow finding a way into you're world. They haven't crossed over yet, but it's only a matter of time." she'd paused to take a long seep of her tea.

"It's like a disease. The insanity festers in Wonderland corrupting everything it comes into contact with. The only ones left are the ones that where mad to begin with. Me, March, and Chess. The others have fallen." she began refilling her cup.

"How bad is it?" asked Bruce.

The Hatter grimaced. "Why don't you take a look yourself." suddenly the world around the disappeared, leaving the tea party and it's occupants floating in an empty void. They all clutched the table, except Loki and the Hatter, who both knew it was just an illusion. The Hatter let out a high pitched breathy giggle (Tim Burton's Hatter laugh, see the film), their terror seeming to amuse her just as much as it did Loki. After all, it's not every day you see a look of pure shock on Thor's face.

Suddenly, the tea party plunged downward towards a rapidly approaching ground so fast Tony barely had time to shriek in terror. They came to a jerky halt fifty feet above the ground, so that the chaos beneath them spread out like a map.

In most places the ground was blackened and burnt, huge lakes of red dotted the land, and though the sun shone, it gave off a dark dim light, that cast more shadow than light. Strange creatures could be seen roaming the scarred face of Wonderland. Some where bigger than others, but they all looked vaguely similar. Most looked like steam punk creatures, mechanical, but with one huge bloodshot eyeball on the front.
The land zoomed beneath them until they hovered above the bones of a castle.

"The White Queen's Palace." whispered the Hatter.

Zombie like soldiers, that looked like chess pieces, marched along the broken battlements and around the courtyard. The White Castle was now covered in blood stains, shadows, and overrun by thorny vines and brambles. The world spun beneath them again and they where now hovering above a dark forest. It was almost completely covered  it shadows. Strange creatures could be seen moving in and out of the trees, all teeth and glowing eyes.

The suddenly, they where back it the Mad Hatters realm, the vibrant green hillside a beautiful sight compared to the chaos they'd just witnessed.

"Does anyone know, why a raven is like a writing desk?" whispered the Hatter.

Nobody answered her. She finally lifted her head, showing them her face once more. She looked tired... So tired.

Steve, who was sitting on her left, handed her a cup of tea. She blinked, then a soft smile graced her face, and she accepted happily.

"So," she said happily "that is why we need each other's help." from inside her coat, she withdrew a long knife, the length of you're elbow to you're finger tips, it's blade engraved with leafy vines. The Vorpal blade. She embedded the tip in the table. It looked wickedly sharp. The Hatter grinned manically.

"Shall we make a deal?"

"What would this deal be, exactly?" enquired Clint, speaking up for once

The Hatter leaned forward in her chair
"We agree to help each other until everything is whole once more."

The Avengers exchanged a meaningful look. They couldn't let what happened to Wonderland happen to Earth.

"We're in." they said simultaneously. They all looked at Loki.

"I'm willing to lend my assistance, IF, the Hatter teaches me about her magic."

"I accept you're terms." laughed the Hatter, sheathing the Vorpal blade. She clapped her hands twice, and a deep dark whole appeared it the ground a few feet away. The Hatter stood, her raven perched on her shoulder, and strode over to it. She beckoned the avengers with a finger. Hesitantly, they stood, and joined her around the lip of the rabbit hole. It seemed that nobody was willing to go first. The Hatter checked her pocket watch again, and sighed. She began walking, passing behind each of the avengers, making them feel very uneasy.

"Did you know," began the Hatter, "that madness is like gravity." she paused behind Steve and Thor.

"All it takes," she rested a hand on each of their backs." Is a little.... Push~"

With those words she pushed the two men over the edge, laughing crazily. They watched them disappear into the depths, until their screams could no longer be heard.

"You're mad." stated Loki, a small smile on his sly lips.

"Why yes." smiled the Hatter " We're all mad here. I'm mad, you're mad..."

"I'm not mad!" cried an indignant Tony. The Hatter rested a consoling hand on his shoulder.

"Well of course you are! You wouldn't be here otherwise. Bye Bye~" she sang, pushing him into the pit. She laughed her mad laugh at his shrieks, but abruptly stopped when her eyes landed on the two agents and one scientist, still standing on the edge.

"Will you jump, or do I have to push you?" she growled.

The trio exchanged a glance, before jumping.

"Hatter?" she spun on her heel when Loki called her name

"When we return to Midgard, what then?" the Hatter gave him her biggest grin yet, teetering dangerously on the edge.

"We pay a little visit to Alice."
